Kamala can still be president. If Joe Biden resigns he could make her the first female president. Wouldn't that be something.

That might be asking him too much. But still what has he got to lose? And we've got everything to gain. But the orange man and his vigilantes would certain be all over that with their big fat trucks (sorry truck owners) and their buffalo heads and whatnot.

If this happened, Kamala would be our 47th president, which would screw up Trump's 47 signage. Even better.

We need to think like chess players, not keep playing checkers!

Think about it. Russia is known for producing some of the best chess players in the world - ever. And they have been playing a long game of global chess, allowing short term losses while keeping their eyes on the end game.

What did Putin say after T won? It’s a new world order. Putin can taste Check Mate.

I have to acknowledge a weird, inverted kinship with Vladimir Putin: he and I both see Trump as a contemptible chump.

As long as it takes. As miserable as we can make them.

We need young women who are attorneys, paralegals, legal researchers, along with their male counterparts, to help build the barricades against every attempt to take rights away from women and minorities.

This is the right approach: Republicans will grouse, saying it's sour grapes or obstructionism or whatever, but it's not. "Barricades" is the right word, closing off avenues of ingress, attack. And, at the risk of sounding a little snotty, I especially like the idea of women - AGs, Secretaries of State, governors - heading this up: there's something satisfying about exploiting the deep, irrational misogyny of MAGA men.

My first root canal - especially the excruciating pain leading up to it - was pretty awful. The second one wasn't any fun either, but at least I'd been through it once and had some sense of what to expect. Same goes for the first time I had a kidney stone, and then the second one.

Long Haul Metaphors, continued: My younger daughter (52 years old) just completed the New York City Marathon in 3 hours, 58 minutes. We've talked about her other marathon experiences, and I'm sure we'll talk about this one soon; as you might imagine, the mental and emotional part of such an event are every bit as much of it as the purely physical part.

When I was much younger - 36 - I rode the Seattle to Portland ride (200 miles) in a little over sixteen hours. There were indeed parts that were strenuous, but mostly it was just the endurance - the interminable turning of the cranks, the road stretching out ahead, and - for me - the loneliness: I started later than most riders and was alone most of the way. My determination to finish was strong, but those times when I would link up with another rider were much easier, made time pass much faster. So that's another metaphor: don't do this alone. Sharing your thoughts, feelings, pain, whatever with even one other person, even in a virtual environment like this, will make things easier. (As writing this comment has made my evening a little more bearable.) Thank you, Liza, for being our host, for providing this matrix; thank you, other subscribers, for being here.

Trump is smart enough to know that if he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue, he can also keep healthcare and slow walk deportations. Who's gonna stop him, his adoring fans? If he wants to go down in history as the best president, he can follow his instincts. Instead of resentful lamenting, we should try to inform his instincts and follow Padre Pio's advice - Pray, hope, don't worry.

I feel for all the Ukrainians, Palestinians, Taiwanese, etc. The only solace for me is in music, nature and that my family life goes on. It’s hard not to feel vindictive as some will lose insurance, some will be deported, prices will go up, etc. Possibly House seats will change in 2 years. But at least Kamala is free to do whatever she wants.
