Thank you, Liza. I’m still in a bit of shock. Your post is encouraging

Liza, wonderful summary of how so many of us feel. We've just gotten off an amusement park ride that lasted 107 days and our heads are still spinning. We will survive. However, I just heard that the Statue of Liberty has booked tickets to return to France.

All the changes that tRump wants may not come as easily as he thinks. There would need to be legislation passed by congress, then signed by the president. Congress may have issues with some of what he thinks he wants and getting that body to agree is another problem which is why we need to be vigilant about calling and mailing letters or cards to the Capitol. Just say NO, we’re not going back!

A lot of my GOP friends have been convinced by disinformation that destroying large chunks of the gov would be a “good thing” because, in their mind, it is just too big and too invasive. They have not really thought about what that would mean and look like, but right now, they will not listen to a rejection of this plan. And my more religious friends are “sure” they want religion in government. Disinformation is one of our biggest problems. They have also been convinced that we are “in a recession” right now. Absurd, but that is their current belief despite all facts to the contrary. All this disinformation guided their votes.

Where is it too invasive? Clean air regulations? Seat belts? Railway safety standards? I can never get a coherent answer to those questions…

Thank you, Liza. My stomach is still weak and nauseous. Can only look a few sites, yours being one. Just having the knowledge that we are not alone in this is helping. Stay safe!

I believe one of the major factors in Dems losing is the disinformation the Trump voters heard and believed. Going forward how do we combat that? I talked to a Trump voter who only listened to two Christen radio stations. No newspapers or tv. He did not believe anything I said.

I believe that. Unsure how we can fix that.

Thank you Liza, for putting a more positive approach on this disaster. I was stunned, scared and angry when I first learned the election results and I started listing a host of horrible events. I Imagined the worst that could come as soon as the dictator takes over. I even drew a picture of the statue of liberty with tears and a snuffed out torch. But now you have reminded me of my own ACOA tendency to project and awfulize I am starting to breathe again. It's so important to practice self care during any crisis.

I’m glad I could help somehow. Trying to find the good things but this does keep me up at night.

I feel the same, but believing that Kamala’s leadership and charisma will keep us inspired through whatever and wherever we are headed.. You, Heather, Bob (Reich), Joyce (Vance), John (Flannery) and Glenn (Kirschner) are my group that gives me what I need to cope and stay informed …so I call you by your first names. Remember the helping hands from the old movie Labyrinth with David Bowie? I am going to ponder on the image of that for a while. Thanks as always

Thank you, Betty. Please do call me Liza! I am honored to be. In their company. I don’t think I saw that Bowie movie! Will have to go watch….

It is really a strange one I haven’t seen it in 20 years. But it is about fascism? Right?

Expand full comment

Wow I just read about it. I know I have seen it.

I am promising myself I will not watch the news. I will read more and watch more movies. I am clawing myself out of a deep dark hole right now.

Thanks to you Liza for watching, writing, and counseling all of us through this rollercoaster ride.

I am still sad but I do see glimmers of light.

I just can’t believe I have to listen to his voice for another 4 years or perhaps the rest of my life.

I add my thanks to those below. What's more, I'll share a sentence from a devotion I read this morning by Elizabeth Sherrill . "There is no darkness too thick for God's light to enter." The instinct to save oneself, crawl into a hole, and get away from this Chinese torture drip of seeing, hearing, and now having to deal with the reality of the orange man, nags at me. So I can empathize with anyone who needs to exhale and regroup. One day at a time is not only the 12-step program answer; right now, it's our answer.

The American two party system only appeals to approximately two-thirds of the eligible voting population. Neither major party represents the people, just a small subset of political fanatics. It is no wonder the country whip lashes left to right; my long held hope is a strong centrist party that can force coalition governance.

I think this is often overlooked. Kamala Harris lost, something like 48% to 51%. So that’s a lot of people who “are on the right side of history.” There’s comfort in that. But what percentage weren’t reached with any of the messages and didn’t vote? How do we capture their silence moving ahead?

I too worry more about the enablers than trump himself. Kash Patel at the CIA or FBI?

Many of trump's plans will wreak economic chaos, particularly the tariffs. Not too early to look at 2026. In the Senate, 20 Republicans and 13 Dems will be up for reelection, assuming no deaths or retirements in the interim.

Good commentary. I plan to enjoy the time between now and inauguration and hope Project 2025 does not come into being. We can go along to get along and pray. He will never be worthy of my respect, I see a charlatan and buffoon ( if those are possible). This old white lady liked Obama best of all, Been voting sine JFK.

Ha! People keep talking about elections going forward. Good luck! With increased presidential powers, a Republican senate and perhaps house, a corrupt Supreme Court, and a discredited media--what elections? We are on a slippery slope.

Expand full comment

I agree about the very slippery slope. I really don’t know if we can survive. But for now I am just working on breathing.
