Oh you nailed it again. The drawings are so representative of this energy and joy filled night. You even got all the best quotes. Expect one. I love that good ole midwestern “Mind your own damn business.” Tim Walz is exactly who was needed to support Kamala Harris. So now let’s DO SOMETHING!!
Thank you so much for sharing your take on the latest evening of the convention since I’m still off the grid in the mountains and am so glad to hear that everything is so positive and exciting!!
As an artist, I was thrilled to hear you describe Tim Walz in a way that says it all:. "His face — there is a lot going on in that face. It’s very real, and very good." Thank you Liza.
Wow, Liza, what a wonderful capture in words and drawings of another exuberant night. Way too much going on, but you delivered the essence with your usual honesty and grace. Again, thank you.
I have been riveted by this convention. So many powerful speakers. Elizabeth Warren said that the Ds have a "deep bench" of talent...so, so true. One thing strikes me over and over. Joy has been a buzzword, but it fits. This is the group of love and joy, while Trump & Vance are perpetuating hate and fear. I'm just so damn glad to be on this team, not only because it's right and good, but it's hopeful and happy.
Thank you, Liza, again and again, for this unique way of reporting: between the drawings and the handwritten quotes, I get not only reminders of what I saw, but also a kind of loose, impressionistic take, a perspective (pun, sorry) that only drawings like yours can convey. (I tried a little draw-along myself last night, with my tablet just below the monitor where I was watching, but... completely different results, nothing like your illustrations: a closeup of an upraised hand (there were lots of those); several tries at getting the draped folds of the flags; a very sketchy rendition of the auditorium.)
Tonight's highlights for me: Stevie Wonder, a national treasure (and props to percussionist Sheila E, as well as the unnamed lead guitarist: women have really claimed their place with that instrument, at last.) Kenan Thompson, a perfect example of how humor and truth are siblings; Hakeem Jeffries, whose use of alliteration is becoming a trademark (one rap reference, when he was reciting the days of the week: "Friday, we fight the power..." from Public Enemy); Amanda Gorman's brilliance with words and phrasing is so good it makes me laugh aloud with delight. But the utmost of the utmost for me was Oprah Winfrey: I've always liked her, and respected her, but never sought her out, never watched her much. Tonight my eyes kept popping open wide with her flowing, poetic language; I'm going to find a transcript of her remarks and read them over, savor them.
Again, thanks; I'll be impatiently waiting for your drawings and remarks tomorrow.
Thank you, Ward, for your kind remarks. It was an amazing convention, don't you think? So many good speakers with great speechwriters. It makes a huge difference, as you mentioned, how the words are written and phrased. So great.
I look forward to your renditions and summaries of each night this week! I just love your substack….it is the perfect amount of information and your drawings are priceless! Thank you…
Love your drawings! I now start with my day with your post first, then Heather Cox Richardson. That’s a big thing in my morning when I sit down with a my cup of my fresh perked coffee
There's been a lot of inspiration every night, for sure. And such broad, diverse, inclusive images. Tim Walz knocked it out of the park, and seeing his son's face made it even more powerful. Love how you capture it all.
My first go to this week. I don't watch all the conventio,so you bring me up- to- date . Did watch Tim and am still impressed. Nothing beats a plain old midwesterner says this old IL girl.
Oops! In my novel-length comment last night, I accidentally implied that percussionist Sheila E and an unnamed lead guitarist appeared with Stevie Wonder. Actually, they were part of John Legend's performance of Prince's "Let's Go Crazy". Sheila (who played with Prince on tour) didn't play timbales as much as she usually does, but sang in great duo performance with John Legend. (BTW: her dad, percussionist Coke Escovido, was part of Santana's lineup years ago.) The guitarist, however, did indeed go crazy. Prince would have appreciated her performance, I'm sure; he was well known for incorporating female musicians in his bands and touring ensembles.
Wow, what a selection of stars.... I love love love the statement about Project 25... it can kill a small animal AND democracy at the same time. Great stuff. And we must, must, must must keep showing that video of the insurrection. No one should forget that. And the fact that nine people perished, is unforgivable. And the lie that no one died. This is the "truth" we have to keep harping on and spotlighting. He and his cronies stormed the Capitol.....the Capitol, for Pete's sake. This is the stuff of Tom Clancy (pardon me Tom) novels. This is no ordinary convention; this is what America is all about...and what is their response? Making fun of Tim Walz's son. I don't think you can go lower. Thanks again for the insightful roundup. You're the best.

Thank you!

Adore Prince. Devastated when he died.
