My dad was exactly that commuter, heading down the New Haven line to Grand Central, and hearing business competitors speaking way too loudly about deals they had in the works, instead of reading their newspapers. It was a good source of intel for him, in the accounting department at General Electric, back when it was based on Lexington Ave. Made me smile to think of him in that window seat, watching Connecticut arrive on his way home.

Years ago, I was in a rental car shuttle, looked around, and saw a dozen men all wearing the khakis, crisp blue shirts, and blue blazers. Business men traveling in nicely pressed business-casual clothing. They were all white dudes. All looking good. I looked down and saw I was wearing the same outfit. Except disheveled. Poetry Injun man wearing wrinkled business-casual. I laughed. Now I mostly wear trousers (and pandemic sweat pants and joggers) that are dark grey or blue or olive. Rarely shades of tan for my pants!
