You know when he first started his obscene nastiness, he told us he could go out on Fifth avenue (or some place, forget the exact wording), and shoot someone, and his supporters would still vote for him. Now that didn't get a lot of attention because the "pussy" statement was all in the press. But, I think it was Maya Angelou who said, "if a person says he is going to do something, believe it." (Or something to that effect.) He is getting sicker and sicker and thinks his horrid, filthy statements are funny. As if. I do hope people--in the privacy of the voting enclosure--where no one sees--will do the right thing. And this nightmare will be over. I agree with you about him and his followers emanating hate just for the heck of it. It's like they had all this hate built up for years and years, and they have just opened the pandora's box and let it all out....and it's sucking us in...trying to make us reciprocate. I never shouted at the evening news so much as I have this year. And finally, I've given up watching it as it makes me sick. Anyway, God bless you for your work. We'd be lost without it. Greeting to the cat.
I can’t imagine any of us liking ourselves as much as we used to. I was always told to “be a better person” than any person denigrating me (from grade school on), and absent any physical interaction I try to be, but it’s harder and harder to not tell someone yelling in my face not to F off.
Go easy on yourself. I've struggled with anger (fury, actually) and I think that's a pretty normal response to hate. It still hasn't made me indiscriminately mean to anyone and I'll bet that's true of you, too. I haven't even been mean to any Trump supporters. Thinking "fuck off" isn't the same as saying it. I think we've shown admirable restraint and decency.
Yes, overall we seem to deal better with ridiculously angry people than the other side, but it’s sickening nevertheless. Hard to watch our children and grandchildren being exposed to that behavior.
I used to say "the donkey and the elephant mated and had a porcupine with accusatory fingers in place of the quills." Now I realize that the donkey was raped.
I've seen an occasional group like that here in central Florida. Yelling and cussing about trump, flags a'waving. And I think about how unbearable they'll be if he manages to get himself shooed in to office, especially if done by extracurricular means (think: the supremes; the House; election interference). I do not relish that, especially as some errant family members still seem determined to support him. The societal fabric of the country will never be the same. It is ludicrous that this ignorant, uninquisitive, rough, insecure, mentally ... (you know the rest) man and his minions have so completely taken over social discourse for the last 10 years. Not a day goes by without them being in the headlines. Good riddance to trump, his roadside supporters, and the hate and retribution that would follow. Thanks to you, Liza, for your comments and wonderful drawings. I hope that the work we've all put in to keep him out of the White House and back in court, will succeed. Our future depends on it.
I think liberals know that if trump wins, it is because of them. Of course, if he is President we expect him to continue the vulgar rants and threats. But he is counter intuitive. What if he is doing this show so he can be the opposite: moderate and charming and inclusive?
Nope, he is showing his true self. People tried to give him the benefit of the doubt in his first term, waiting for him to become presidential. It never happened and he is more unhinged than ever this time.
Yes yes yes Nancy . Some of our memories are way too short. I’m glad some Substack writers are reminding readers of the reality of Trump during his first campaign and time in office. He was never moderate or charming or evinced many (if any) related positive or good or moderate behaviors. Except maybe many many many worthy only of good riddance. “We” meaning all people should not allow themselves to be hoodwinked into thinking the office and its great (previous) respect would change his behavior and that of his cronies. No I’m sorry definitely not. If anything it emboldened him to be and do even worse. .
One thing I think is happening is that a majority of those supporting ******** have a very myopic view of - the world, their state, their block, their household. It is difficult if not impossible for them to comprehend the bigger picture, which is how can this ding-dong occupy the White House? They may like only one thing that he has said, and because of that, will overlook everything else. But if they were capable of stepping back and asking the question - who should Americans have as their leader, they should come to only one conclusion. Liza and other like-minded commentators are right - this guy is categorically unfit for the presidency. Forget all about his policies. He is simply morally bankrupt and that is the last thing Americans should want as their president. VOTE!!!
As a small part of a long and complicated dream last night, I found myself on foot in downtown Seattle, trying to navigate dangerously snarled rush-hour traffic. Everybody was angry; motorists were honking, pedestrians were yelling and giving the finger left and right. I finally decided to just keep my middle fingers extended, and wave them around randomly. Less work, I told myself. (This remark is a response to others who have mentioned this gesture in their posts.)
On a more serious note: it's going to continue to be hellish for quite some time, regardless of the election's outcome. There will continue to be anger and violence; hopefully, it will be easier to quell if Harris and the Democrats prevail. I'm not being a pessimist; more like a realist: If Trump wins, I'm hoping that seasoned, rational leaders (Dems and some Republicans as well) will lead sort of a resistance-by-legal-means movement, to at least neutralize Project 2025 gambits. Keep heart, everybody, keep heart; this is not the time to lapse into despair.

A few more days to go (if we’re lucky)
Go easy on yourself. I've struggled with anger (fury, actually) and I think that's a pretty normal response to hate. It is. It's dark and painful. But I don't think that has to translate to liking ourselves any less.
I used to say "the donkey and the elephant mated and had a porcupine with accusatory fingers in place of the quills." Now I realize that the donkey was raped.
Very apt - unfortunately. It’s not as if we women couldn’t have guessed, but too apt. Hopefully all sane men understand now.

Nope. We already had four years with him and he was never moderate, charming or inclusive.

The term ding-dong makes me laugh. Thanks for that.

Wonderful post Liza. I’m grateful we have you.
🙏
He is the nightmare that never ends. Impossible for me to understand how or why any sane human would want him as the leader of the country.
