"The Post has always stood for and what we hope for in a leader: character and courage in service to the American ethic, veneration for the rule of law, and respect for human freedom in all its aspects. " A direct quote from their statement. Not only do I love you drawing of newspapers crumpled and crumbling but this is how the masses are controlled when freedom of speech or the fear to take a stand leads to a dictatorship, which is what Trump and his minions want. Rule of law!!! Trump has no regard for the rule of law. No respect for human freedom. So, once again, the powerful with $$$$ are choosing Trump and themselves over the everyday hardworking American people. Elon must be investigated but there are those in our government that have allowed him to wield his power, influence and pocketbook to take over . One can see why he supports Trump! A little praise and a little money goes a long way with Trump and his minions. Scary times.
Hooray for you, Liza!! The wealthy continue to prove their cowardice and their ignorance. I agree it is sad for the actual journalists that work there. Some have left, I’m sure for many, they need their jobs. Just emphasizes what tRump and MAGA continues to cost the nation. Thanks for your courage and love of country.
With all due respect, I have the money I am saving from WP to support more other smaller publishers. Thank you for sharing this opposing voice. She offered ideas I had not considered. But even after considering it, I am not going to re-subscribe. I'll support more people here on Substack with what I save. Great voices here, too.
Thanks for sharing, but I am still canceling. If the truth can so easily be thwarted, the journalists are not giving us what we need. I will stick with supporting Substack reporters who are free to speak the truth. Democracy Dies in Darkness, indeed.
Like you, Liza, I am heartbroken! A paper where people say they know that democracy requires light just blew out its own candle. I just canceled my subscription. Thanks for the picture--as usual you captured so much in an elegantly few lines of ink!
We too, cancelled our subscription to WAPO. We are pondering an even more difficult cancellation--Amazon Prime. Unfortunately unless one lives in a large city, willing to drive all over and shop, or pay exorbitant shipping prices from other vendors, we are stuck. And don't forget DeJoy and the post office mess. We need a blue wave.
I was shocked when I heard the WAPO news, and then read that the LA Times had done the same. That said, the Philadelphia Inquirer ran a gangbuster editorial endorsing Harris.
Still the WAPO editorial cartoon was a wash of black, playing off the Post's masthead admonition that "democracy dies in darkness" and multiple columnists excoriated the decision; Ruth Marcus's was especially strong. Plus, she made the closing point that the Post is printing (or pixelating?) all the blowback, so all is not lost.
While I don’t subscribe to the Washington Post, I have been receiving one or two of their newsletters, which are now directed where they belong - into my spam folder.
Liberals can't see that policy changes are just icing. The system needs an update. NO EC; compulsory VOTING; NO Private Money for campaigns which are SIX WEEKS MAX; term and AGE limits for our PUBLIC SERVANTS who should be called this! And, the New President is in the WH before Thanksgiving. Since three elections have been messed up the the EC-- and only seven states decide anything-- and since no one talks about this, we know it is too late. CHINA will dominate because they are five times as populous and 90% believe nothing and 55% are atheists. We are asking god to bless us and still waiting for the easter bunny.
Liza, I am shocked, but I guess I should not be. WaPo was the last newspaper I subscribed to, but if journalists are being paid to write only what corporate wants, then I can no longer trust them. The saddest thing for me is that this is exactly what Trump wants. Thankfully, we have plenty of other ways to get the news, I’m looking at you dear Liza, and other Substackers!
I’ve cut ties with countless newspapers and big-name publications this year, and not a single regret. That cash? It’s now fueling the real voices over on Substack—the ones who dare to speak the truth, the ones who are unfiltered, unafraid, and unapologetic. Every single penny goes straight into the hands of those who write with passion, with fire, and with authenticity.
Well done Liza. I'm with you!

I also discontinued my subscription.
Just canceled my subscription. Sad and mad.

We live in interesting times.
Most of us have not seen so many institutions choose to commit suicide before.
Should Trump win, they will also be a party to the genocide which will follow.
Collaborators w/o a doubt
Big disappointment, but read Phoebe first

We agree about the voices on Substack. But if we want to get Bezos’s attention, we should cancel our Prime subscription and not buy from Amazon.

Inflation is the consequence of Trump/Pence.
Improvement is the consequence of Biden/Harris.
Any questions, besides why is this a close race?
(feel free to use this in a cartoon, and I do mean free - legally)

I cancelled, too. We have to fight with our pocketbooks. I am very disheartened at their lack of courage.
No matter who wins this election, the alliance of Trump and Musk with Russia, China, and North Korea could spell disaster for the world.
