One could argue that the Democrats have better environmental policy, so the tree is a Democrat. But would its leaves be, as well? Often progeny (which leaves are not, but bear with me here) do not follow in their parent’s political footsteps. In fact they often rebel and have political views that are the opposite of their parents.
You are right - we can’t always guide our kids (though I did put my son in a headlock when I spotted Bernie’s book in his apartment in 2016)(he wound up volunteering and doing IT for Hillary - damn right).
(And it’s absolutely wise not to talk politics with family I agree, though not genetically possible if you’re family is Greek-American and it’s thanksgiving)
When I was in 4th Grade they brought a voting machine into our classroom (the giant kind with all the levers and the mechanical curtain) so we could learn how to vote, at age 9. When I came out of the curtain one of my classmates pointed at me and said “who did you vote for?” I squeaked, “Carter?” And she shot back, “Of course you do, all the Jews vote for Carter.” What a strange thing to say, I thought. Nonetheless, every time I enter the voting booth I remember that encounter.
Wow, that's interesting. I recall learning very early on that one of my best friends down the street was Jewish, and then learning how the Country Club nearby didn't allow Jews (let alone Blacks) as members and it was one of those moments in my early life I'll never forget. (my parents refused to be a part of said CC).
Mercifully, our kids have the same political beliefs. Makes for enjoyable family gatherings. However, that can't be said of some extended family so discussing politics is off limits. It's hard to love someone and also be accepting of their (disgusting) politics. Just a truce.
Ohmydog.... if the orange man were in charge and this happened, I would be going into a school and practicing hiding under my desk like the teachers told us to do when we were kids. (Did our elders really think that was going to save us if we, God forbid, got bombed...and I don't mean having too much to drink?) As it turns out, I'm writing a book about "harmony." I better tell the illustrator to paint faster. I love the kid asking what party are we affiliated with? Just the kind of thing a little kid would ask. LOL. I didn't think much about politics on the playground.. I guess I was too busy wondering when Skinny Mary would get off the seesaws. Brilliant toons, as usual
Love both your cartoons, but especially the second one. My father-in-law as a staunch Republican and my mother-in-law was a confirmed Democrat. I think even my father-in-law would be switching parties at this point. Coming from a Jewish background, not talking about politics (or shouting about them) was not to be considered.
Thank you Liza. It must be so exciting to have something published in the New York Times that I am over the top excited for you as an artist. The joy of so many being able to see your work and create their own relationship with it. Congratulations! And thank you for sharing with us. :-)
No - my thanks. Am laughing - and already know I’m handing it off to our daughter! She grew up with the NYer in the house - but also married now 15? Years (ack can’t remember exactly). She’ll totally get these!

I love your illustrations.
Thank you, Patris. Ah, the Bernie phenom!!
My own history is almost identical. That means you are one of the very best people in the world. In case you wondered.
Haha! I thought so!

How about a sketch regarding the death of grass cutting in woke CA? Do grass/plants have rights? Fun subject?
yes, that is! The whole no grass cutting thing lately. But now it is not timely enough perhaps, I missed my moment!

A jungle gym separated by political affiliation! Words fail. Love the cartoons, Liza.
Thanks, Linda!

I have heard Jewish families are like that!
Greek American families too. No retreat no surrender is our motto
I like your more personal comments. Helps me know you better.

Thank you, Anne!
