I watched the Simon Rosenberg last night and he asserts that there is no need to be unified as a party in action and that the important thing is that people stand up the best way they can stand up. I am surprised that 5 Democrats voted to censure Al Green today. That is not a good thing, wtf Hakeem?
Your drawing of Al Green is incredibly powerful, captures the moment perfectly.
Your description herein is well worded, wholly accurate, and is humble yet rightfully passionate! I love that you’re doing what you’re doing this evening. Moderator! Kudos! As I view the photos, I find myself going to a place I visit with more and more frequency: I wonder, what were they like in third grade? And if by chance we might share conversation, it would be fun to ask them what they remember: who and how were they in third grade? It’s such a pivotal age and I tell you, when a sales person is concluding a transaction with me, if the timing is right, that’s the very question I’ll pose to them… I’ll say, “I’ll bet you were really great to have in class in third grade!” Invariably, it brings a smile and you see them go to that place in their mind. I get all kinds of responses, which matches how there were all kinds of kids in my classes, year after year… Awesome people, troubled people, gifted people, witty people, brilliant people, hilarious people, competitive people, sensitive people, confident people, shy and uncertain people, troubled and brave people who deserved purple hearts when they got off the school bus, as my dear friend and co-teacher Les Apay would declare. Well! That was a trip. Please forgive me. Have great fun tonight and maybe you’ll actually report back that at some point, socializing after the panel, that third grade actually came up in conversation. Lol.
This is a great share and a fun question to ponder. It was a good year for me as I had a teacher that wrote a two page note to my parents about her enjoyment of me in her class. She said wonderful things about me. I still have this letter in my 70’s and it always give me strength when I read it or think about it. Also interesting as I got into trouble a lot for talking but not in her class.
FYI, ya'll, I just called Rep. Green's office and left a thank-you message for him...ya have to be in his district to send an email they'll read, which makes sense.
I super appreciated his speaking out and wish the rest of the Dems had left with him. I feel it would have bothered 47 much more to speak to a half empty room.
Perhaps all the Dems should have stayed home, or better yet, hold a town hall in their own districts, and live watch the address to a half empty chamber.
Do people remember when a Republican yelled at Barack Obama’s speech to Congress? I think Congressman Green was repaying in kind. Who knows if that works as a fundraising ploy? I do know that hypocrisy goes on and on and on. I think it’s reasonable to find out what works on viewers, but I hope Democrats find the key.
Maybe some Democrats are not ready to abandon perfect decorum - they haven’t yet descended into many of the Republican performatives ( MJG, for example) but I think Al Green said he was intentional in his protest, in the long history and tutelage of Gandhi, MLK Jr. and John Lewis. to cause good trouble. The censure was an important piece of that. It makes me feel braver in my protesting and resistance. The fall of America as we know it, seems to be the plan.
There is a difference between "perfect decorum" and standing up for what is right and what you believe in. As the saying goes "if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for everything."
Have fun at the conference. God bless Green. I think more should have stood up with him....or boo or something. And holding up little signs like at an auction really looked kind of lame (sorry). It's a quandary, though. But If everyone stood up and booed or yelled like they do in the British Parliament or banged their feet, at least people who were watching (Yuck, I couldn't.) would know as one sign put it "This isn't normal."
I totally agree with you. All the democratic Patriots should have stood up and start singing "Amazing Grace" or "America The Beautiful". Perhaps they all need to watch Casablanca to remind themselves of what patriotism looks like.
Well said. Oh, that's sterling. I could see it all ... the lot of them singing one of those songs. That is definitely what they should have done. You can't sanction someone for singing....Brilliant.
Liza, Great photo of you and the other cartoonists. Your drawings and comments are refreshing. Thank you. Too bad our US Constitution is being torn up and replaced by project 2025. If only our founding fathers could rise from their graves.
You have a way of bringing laughter, Liza. 🤗. I chuckled as I read through this post about a serious happening. Thank you for the gifts you bring us that make us all healthier. 👏🏼
Rep. Al Green's action reminded me of Victor Laszlo. I would have expected the rest of his com-Patriots to stand up with him, and sing "Amazing Grace" or "America The Beautiful."
Enjoy tonight.

I stand corrected. There were 10 Democrats who voted to Censure Al Green.

Agree, that stinks. I don't dislike Hakeem but he's not a strong or, IMO, creative leader and not what the Dems need now.
In order to stand up properly, one needs a spine.
I dare say most of our elected officials are suffering from Spinal Bovitation.

Thank you for this insight. You got me going into 3rd grade and pondering what was going on in the minds of all the kids in the class.

Thanks again for your fun and astute cartoons!I

Would love a cartoon about uncharted waters. Have a blast tonight!

I sure pray that the Democratic reps find a key, any key!
Think Margorie Taylor Green screaming back and way out of line. No one censored her.
All of this. Spit on. And enjoy tonight x
Al Green makes "good trouble." It's not the time for decorum while MAGA is bulldozing our Democracy.
Have a great evening. Laughter is a great relief!

wish we had all been there to stand up with Al Green.
I totally wish we could all been there, along with other Patriots and stood up and start singing "Amazing Grace" or "America The Beautiful".

Liza, been following your posts for a while. Today's post turned me into a paying fan. Thank you for all you do and all you write.
And if Pres. Zelenskyy is any indications, comedians (that includes cartoonists and humorist) may have the best shot at being real patriots.
Thank you so much, Rafi!!
