Here are two drawings from last week’s batch that I sent into The New Yorker.
I love drawing swings and tall trees. Over the years, I think I have been inspired by the Krazy Kat by George Herriman. It’s visually interesting to me, and one can put anthing/anyone on a swing and have it mean something.
The one I drew below is odd (not that the snail on a swing isn’t odd), but I did it anyway. People change their political persuasions as they grow older sometimes, and I thought the idea that someone might be “leaning” towards hard-core conservatism was bizarre. I can’t image it’s something you lean into. I actually don’t know how it happens.
It’s similar to this one I did for The New Yorker in 1992. I don’t recall the political reference now, but it had something to do with people shifting to liberalism.
I am married to someone who is in the same political camp as me, and it makes it very comfortable. We talk politics all the time. In fact we compete sometimes as to who knows breaking news first! I cannot imagine living with someone who either doesn’t pay attention to the news or is completely different, politically.
I hope you are having a lovely Saturday. It’s cooled down here, I hope it has for you. Crazy weather.
See you tomorrow!
Liza, Thank you for giving me a much-needed smile today.
Wonderful, as you always are
