It’s the season to start making comfort food! This couple above need to get on that. What exactly would be stressful food? And what is your favorite comfort food? I might go for mac and cheese. Happy Sunday! Preparing for son-in-law’s parents to come over for dinner tonight, they are visiting from Israel. I look forward to spending time with them.
This time of year any pasta dish is comfort food - or a good broth in which I throw in the easiest made meat balls on the planet, tender leaves of endives, diced scallions and finally mei fun noodles.
Love love love this cartoon! My ultimate comfort food is ice cream. Then there is mashed potatoes (lots of butter & cream). Last night a friend served a delicious pasta & arugula salad. The pasta was comforting; the arugula healthy... so I guess that's comfort food with a smart touch.
I draw the distinction on novelty. For the past score years I’ve been doing daily cooking for a serious foodie who is no longer able to play with food herself. It’s constant “we have to try this.” That’s stressful. I have a fair collection that I can cook from memory or riff on. That’s comforting. As my life-tank gauge approaches the red zone I need to get all the mileage left out of the cognitive processing capacity left.
Vegetables, especially cooked ones, are stressful to me, because at best they are inoffensive. Anything I've never eaten before (incl. most ethnic foods, especially ones with lots of spices) scare the shit out of me, or get it out of me some other way. Comfort foods are things I liked when I was 5 years old. My go-to is cold dry cereal in a bowl, with a glass of milk (with ice) alongside it. Maybe a spoon, but I'll also eat it with my fingers (I'm descended from peasants). I eat a fair amount of cereal, and want to be highlighted on my gravestone as a "cereal killer" but in a milky way. Ah, Milky Way, speaking of comfort foods.
Spaghetti is my comfort food. I have never in all my years (which are many) had mac and cheese. I don't like the way it looks or smells. But I am in the minority. Also ice cream. Perhaps I'll try spaghetti with ice cream. ... or maybe not. Enjoy your time with family.
Sometimes the line between comfort and stress is very fine indeed. I envy you for the opportunity to be able to talk to someone who has firsthand experience of the eastern Mediterranean. I feel we do not know even half of what it is really going on. Each of our news sources has its own biases.
I find anything cooked on a sheet pan comforting these days, plus it warms up the kitchen.
Laughed at that cartoon. Been there.

Stressful food is anything that takes over 30 minutes to prepare!
Yes!
Yukon golds mashed with lashings of butter, parmesan shavings and full cream milk. They'll save your life!

Scrambled eggs, frozen peas and toast. Total comfort for me! No one in my life understands.

'Like' does your response no justice. It would have to be at least 'Love'. What a wonderful mix of words and meanings!
Right back at you, Doug. Thanks!

It's true. Living in Israel right now--or Palestine-- is unlike anything we can imagine.
Too funny. Stressful food would be something that takes a lot of time and attention to make. All food can be comforting, if I don't have to make it.
Nothing better than Mac-n-cheese for comfort food; 3 kinds of cheese please!
Stressful: sweet potatoes. Haven’t come within a mile of them since an unfortunate childhood experience. Comfort: baked potatoes. With lots of butter.
Family from Israel!
