This was published in The New Yorker several years ago, after submitting it numerous times. Sometimes, persistence pays off.
It’s fun to get stuff and fun to give stuff. We are a pretty utilitarian giving gift household— except we always give each other lots of sweets! One daughter bakes things for us, the other knits things for us, and my husband always makes little wooden animals for everyone. I cook the meals!
Here is another one I did a few weeks go, in the same vein but with a different tone. (The New Yorker passed on it)
Happy Boxing Day! I just learned of the origins of Boxing Day from my husband. It is from the UK, and originally was meant to be a day to box gifts for those in need. Does anyone do that now on this day after Christmas?
Hope you are enjoying some time off. I am trying to get something done, but not getting anywhere. I did make turkey soup and granola just now, that’s something! I kind of like this week between Christmas and New Year, it’s almost like time is suspended.
I may go read a book.
I was just talking about that with a friend. How this is a time suspended - unique in our lives. Even when you don’t celebrate Christmas it is the thing that everyone experiences.
Do you have any good reading suggestions?
