I’m currently in Washington, DC, in advance of going to the People’s March tomorrow and the inauguration on Monday. I will live-draw both, and go live on Substack. I will let you know approximately when I will go live. I am partnering with another journalist here on Substack, Kate Woodsome. We will go live together.
Today Biden said the Equal Rights Ammendment has passed, but he did not force its ratification. As President, he has “no direct role in approving amendments and his statement has no legal force by itself.” But advocates say that Biden’s statement gives it further credibility. “In effect, Mr. Biden and his allies are daring opponents to go to court to argue that women do not have equal rights.” Here is the NY TImes story about this; it’s a bit complicated, so I recommend reading the report. But really good news.
“In keeping with my oath and duty to Constitution and country, I affirm what I believe and what three-fourths of the states have ratified: The 28th Amendment is the law of the land, guaranteeing all Americans equal rights and protections under the law regardless of their sex,” Mr. Biden said in a statement.
I am beyond tired today, so I will end here. The opening of the exhibit of New Yorker cartoons and covers I curated was absolutely wonderful!! 400+ people came! I will write about it this weekend and share photos. It was videotaped, but it will take me a while to edit that with a professional editor. Here is one photo for you to enjoy. That’s Editor David Remnick and Cartoon Editor Emma Allen (in the flowered shirt) in the foreground!
Thanks for being here, see you tomorrow! Happy Friday.
So very happy to witness the success of the exhibit. And so very happy about Biden's declaration on ERA. Travelling mercies. Thanks for all you do. Stay safe and sane.
Be safe in DC, no one knows what might happen.
