I appreciated this conversation. The one thing I would point out that I have noticed with Substack is that you have a cultivated, self selected audience. No one challenges you much on any cartoon. So, in terms of people staying in their own bubbles, Substack may contribute even more to that phenomenon. I think political cartooning needs to be consumed by everyone in a culture to have deep effect. I hope newspapers reverse course and realize their responsibility to discourse through allowing great cartoonist to be published. I know y’all have to make a living so I get the comfort of having Substack to help with that but in terms of cultural impact, I am not sure it exists in the same way. I read Ben Franklin biography The First American. It may be of interest to you to read about him as a young person as a ‘printer’ and broadsheet producer. Love your stuff, just wish everyone was seeing it more and more political cartoons in general. They are so needed right now to present challenging topics.
