Prayers don't change the past, just the consequences.

Safe travels to LA tomorrow. We all need humor - that's for sure. Love your cartoon. It is how I feel every time I go somewhere in a crowd. It just so happens that my husband and I are going out to dinner with friends and my husband's cousin and his wife tonight. We haven't seen them since they returned from California and the fires in Altadena. Their son lost his home, and they lost their belongings in a rental house. I hope there will be no talk of politics or Trump. His cousin, his wife, and I are on the right side of history. However, everyone else is still loving Trump! So, I'm hoping we can make it for two hours. Paul Roth's cartoon is spot on, too. Thank you for the link to James Thurber. Just taking a quick peek and looking at his quotes is so enlightening. That is a task for tomorrow.

Liza, I celebrate your appreciation of the power of humor in these humorless times. It's thrilling to know that a pen and a line can defeat men and their lies.

At this point the most shocking news would be that the Trump administration suddenly committed an act of compassion. Imagine.

Liza - with you on all of this.. the news of the judge’s arrest sickened me.

I can be silent on the Monster in public - unless someone says anything positive about him in my vicinity. IMO then they are asking for it.

First: Yes, I can get together with friends and NOT talk about The World Situation for ten minutes, sometimes much longer; but it's always there, lurking just below the surface. What I try to do when I do talk about The World Situation is to look for solutions, things I actually can do to help in whatever way I can. I try not to "get drunk on anger", as a friend of mine once put it, hype myself up with outrage, imagining vengeful things I would like to do, etc.; that just dissipates my energy and leaves me feeling powerless and cynical.

Second: I grew up paging through The New Yorker, looking at the cartoons, some of which I actually understood and laughed at. (My parents had a subscription, even out here in the wilderness of the Seattle area.) Thurber was a favorite; my parents also had anthologies of his essays, which, by the time I was nine or ten, made sense to me, and were amusing, even as I realized that a lot was going over my head.

A good number of years ago, author Arthur Koestler argued, in his book "The Act of Creation", that humor was an example of the famous "Aha!" experience we associate with artistic inspiration and scientific discovery. Far from being some sort of trivial distraction, humor teaches our minds to see and appreciate those moments where some kind of unexpected juxtaposition of ideas leads to inspiration and expansion of our consciousness. Keep up your spirits and good work, Liza; you are doing a noble thing.

Great job. You and Michael enjoy your night. Sure to be a fun one. No, I can honestly say I could have a hard time not talking about the lawlessness and incompetence I see unfolding daily, or hourly. Great cartoon, it would be a happy hour not to talk taRump for 69 minutes. I ❤️🥰 James Thurber

OMG! Ever since my oldest sister gave me Thurber’s The Great Quillow for my birthday so many years ago, I’ve been a huge fan of his drawings and writings. What an amazing talent and I can see how you have been so inspired by him. Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories!

P. S. Arrest of a judge is just disheartening; when will this madness end?!
