Trump: "I Don't Feel Like A King"
Let's turn out in 100's of thousands today to make sure he never does
Yesterday, I mentioned on live that Trump was instructing ICE to go into farm fields and restaurants to arrest undocumented workers. Today’s NY Times reports that he is scaling back on that because it is “hurting industries and constituencies” that he does not want to lose. A senior ICE director wrote to regional ICE:
“Effective today, please hold on all work site enforcement investigations/operations on agriculture (including aquaculture and meat packing plants), restaurants and operating hotels,” he wrote in the message.
The email explained that investigations involving “human trafficking, money laundering, drug smuggling into these industries are OK.” But it said — crucially — that agents were not to make arrests of “noncriminal collaterals,” a reference to people who are undocumented but who are not known to have committed any crime.
So in other words, don’t just round up people who look like they might be undocumented, i.e. people with brown skin who look like they come from Mexico.
According to the Times, Trump acknowledged that the crackdown might be alienating industries he wanted to keep on his side.
There is a much better way to control immigration problems than with the ham-fisted, brutal, inhumane arrests of people indiscriminantly that the Trump administration is doing.
It is clear to me that so much of what he’s doing is not thought-out and is run by inexperienced people. Kristi Noem is trying to photo-op her way into what she thinks is the “part" of Director of Homeland Security. This is not a reality tv show, this is about people’s real lives. And don’t get me started on Deputy Chief of Staff Steven Miller, who has been pushing ICE to arrest over 3,000 people a day. It strikes me as an obsession on his part, a form of cleansing that is frightening.
Trump is throwing himself a very expensive birthday military parade today. He was asked by a reporter the other day to respond to the idea of today’s No Kings Day Protests around the country, and it seemed like he didn’t know about it. He responded that he doesn’t feel like a king.
He’s a wanna-be king.
See you later, I will be live broadcasting sometime between 2-4 in NYC’s Bryant Park during the gathering there. You will get a notifcation via email, or on your phone.
Stay safe, I hope we turn out in the 100’s of thousands today all over the world.
