The Democratic National Convention starts tomorrow. I will be covering it by doing live drawings of the speakers and more during prime-time, and each night, I will provide a synopsis of what I saw. I drew the Republican Convention several weeks ago, a post for each of the four days, here was day one. Those four days were painful to watch; these upcoming four days will be a lot of fun. And, yes, joyous. In 2016, I attended the DNC in person and drew— it was fascinating. Hillary Clinton was the nominee that year and while I didn’t feel it was "‘joyous” in the sense we feel now, there was a buzz in the air. A woman might be elected President. This time, it really might happen.
There will be a buzz in the air this time, for sure. I can feel it and I’m not in Chicago! The Washington Post has a helpful guide to watching this week.
I worry, of course. While the Democrats will be having a fun week, I fear the Republicans will be plotting. Scheming. Trump will have some rallies, apparently, because he doesn’t want to give up the spotlight. But you know what I mean about the worry. It’s like when you were little, and your sibling is quiet for too long in the other room, you suspect some trick is going to be played on you at any moment.
They are planning things, the tricks, will be far worse than anything a sibling could dream up. Much of it will be attempts at voter supression, and they are digging for dirt, I am sure. The good news is that Kamala Harris has been around a long time in public service, so one would imagine that if anything bad were in her closet (and I am not implying that there should be), it would have been discovered long ago.
Will there be an October Surprise?
Far right influencers are expressing annoyance and dissapointment with the Trump campaign, saying they are “blowing it.” I often wonder what’s going on inside that campaign, and what they are trying to cook up. Or maybe all their energies are being put into how to claim the election was stolen, and how to engineer another insurrection. Part of me hopes that reasonable Republicans are resigned to the fact the Democrats will win, in fact many of them may be secretly hoping Trump loses. They can’t express that openly. Oooh, maybe some of them will vote Democratic and just not tell anyone.
I keep thinking about Trump’s last press conference, where he stood for 90 minutes talking about all his grudges and spewing hateful things, all while standing next to a table full of breakfast cereal. He said at some point, he was eyeing the Cheerios, saying he hadn’t seen them in a long time and maybe would take the box home with him.
I just turned on the tv to listen to the news, and CNN had live footage of Harris in a convenience store picking up a bag of doritos. I love it.
See you tomorrow.
Can't wait to see your drawings of the convention...Love how you capture joy in 2 dimensional pics! And as for the planning and arranging happening in the other camp . . .I am worried about October surprises too...and mostly because we all know that it doesn't have to be true for them to talk as though it is.
Love the drawing. I'm thinking I will get a many a good night sleeps! I won't worry about what the next 4 years bodes for my granddaughters. One starts college and the other a will be a junior in high school. This one begins a new adventure in local government, having applied and accepted to represent our local school, on a Youth Advisory Council for the county. She loves history, government, is enamored with Presidential history, etc. She can't vote but wants someone strong to lead our country. The oldest is excited to vote in her first Presidential Election.
