welcome home! trust your "time off" was everything you had planned. Duck Dynasty? people competing for a step forward in citizenship? very ugly. not what this country should stand for!
When it comes to criticizing judges or anybody, three monkeys are smarter than just about anyone. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. We just can't seem to leave people alone who we disagree with. Sad.
It never occurred to me that the mango menace could try to circumvent the midterms. Every day, I wake up thinking, What's he done now? I know this is real, this is happening, but I still can't believe it. I had exactly the same reaction to 9-11 as I watched it unfold in real time on CNN. The rational brain was engaged, but the fantasy brain refused to accept it. It was a long time before reality caught up with the fantasy. At 83, I am beyond utterly appalled and frightened. Liza, we are counting on you and Ann to keep the faith (which puts an unfair burden on you). OK, now I am rambling...
I have a granddaughter who loves to travel. Next year, as a Senior in high school with 5 years of Spanish instruction, the Spanish Club and French Club will be traveling to France and Spain. She is excited to see the Eiffel Tower for herself, hopes they go to Versailles, etc. If I were able, I would be a chaperone on the trip. I am most proud that she keeps up with the news and has loved history and presidential history since she was little. Her AP US History class spent today scrubbing stones in a cemetery for Civil War and 1812 soldiers, among others. Her teacher also gave me a history lesson on why one stone was so far away from the others - it was an African American. She, in her way, is changing the minds of some of her classmates, whose parents are totally into MAGA, to see Trump and his admin for what they are doing to our country. Trump and the Project 2025 people are months ahead in planning the next steps or distractions. The plane - the Trojan Horse - filled with fool's gold and attracting a fool to take it off their hands, which is not a working plane or worth 400 million- has been idle for a while. Trump was an easy mark. I do see people getting up off their couches to protest or volunteer to make people's lives better. Thank you for keeping us all informed, enlightened, and entertained with your cartoons and reminders to follow Ann and Heather.
(I can write a short comment! I can! I can!) Timothy Snyder's "On Tyranny" looks interesting; I'm sure I've heard it discussed on "fake news" CNN and MSNBC. Another author well worth mentioning in this context is Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a professor at New York University who has written extensively about tyranny, fascism, authoritarianism and so on.
And you, dear Liza, keep us honest: I may not be able to do much, but I can do a hell of a lot more than sit and complain, yelling at the TV.
One thought - I just want to mention this, get it out, see if it spreads (which is what Richard Dawkins meant when he coined the term "meme"): what if we approached activism as though we were in a hostage negotiation? What if we pestered our more conscientious legislators (Cory Booker, AOC, Jamie Raskin, etc.) to adopt this approach? "Reasoning" with a hostage-taker is a whole different model from arguing with a demented narcissist.
Traveling mercies. I, too, hope more influencers and/or people with big bucks can call out what's happening. If the every-day person sees that famous, educated, successful people with deep pockets are banning together to out this flagrant disrespect for our country's values and the dismantling of everything we hold dear, they may be less afraid to join in. Glad you had such a nice trip. We enjoyed "going" along with you. I went to a conference where publishers were talking about banned books and the restrictions they are under, and almost left crying. I keep asking myself: Is this really happening?
Thank you Liza. Great comments and I hope Paris was as great as I imagine for you. We are all in this together but your drawings and content keep it fresh
Have I mentioned I appreciate your calm way of advocacy and activism? I enjoy sharing your wisdom.

Welcome home! Looks like you had beautiful weather in Paris. It made for some fun people watching (& in your case, people sketching)! 🖌️
You epitomize the rational, measured and moral reaction to the insanity Trump embodies. I hope you know that. And it’s a beacon.
Welcome back!
