It would be really fun for me to see this scene over the weekend. What are my chances? I am headed to the New Jersey shore— not the beach, as everyone might assume, but the bay. My great aunt and uncle bought an old hunting lodge there back in the 1930’s, and we have been going there ever since I was a kid. Here is my father, doing his birding thing as we leave the house by boat, the only way to come and go to Sedge Island. That’s my great-aunt Helen on the left, in her characteristic scarf and crisp white blouse, and I am sure there is a cigarette lit in her hand. She was a tough cookie and scared me a little, but I knew she loved me. Now her grandsons—my cousins— and I go every year with their families.
I am bitter with envy. Damn you, Liza! But what a uniquely great place for you to meld new feelings and impressions with others that go back as far as you yourself do. I don't have a place like that, and I think most of us don't. I've been lucky in other ways, though, so I'll try to get my envy in check eventually.
Sorry, Chuck. But I am very aware of how fortunate I am, it's true. It's a great observation you give me, how my cousins and I share this--particularly my one cousin Cap, with whom I share a great grandfather. we love to talk family history, and this place holds many stories. It's comforting and informing.
Little more brevity in the caption would make this one a real winner! “Sometimes, it’s not about the fries.” Anyone who’s ever been to beach with food and seagulls would get it! That, forgive my suggestion. I’m no less a fan. (Just an incessant editor.)
So lucky! Enjoy the fresh scent of wind and water! Happy weekend and happy sketching!
Amazed you've made it through storms on such low land!
I know, right?!
How utterly magical. You might just see those fun loving birds, who can say? 🤞🏼

What a haven! Enjoy the magic there.
(Knew some tough cookie aunts myself and never doubted their love for one minute.)
True, right? Those aunts. They shape us, I think.
Love the cartoon, and the destination. Have a wonderful visit.
THank you!
Love the seagulls! I hope you have a great getaway!
Thanks!

Good point, Patrick. I think I felt the caption was too long, but didn't work on it. Good call!!
