No rant: a simple and decisive question.

I have wondered who we are most of my life. But until recently I had a kind of “faith” in the concept of the American people. However now we are so splintered and in our own information “bubbles” that that concept no longer exists. It is indeed a new world!!

Love and appreciate your publicly putting yourself out there.

Thank you, Liza. We absolutely do need to talk about this. To encourage our friends and loved ones to vote. People tend to think *politics* don't affect their normal lives. Unless they are marginalized. Or until there's a problem and they need healthcare or justice. We need to take care of ourselves and each other.

From reading Scott Peck’s ( The Road Less Traveled) and drawing on his definition in his subsequent book “People of the Lie” I feel like I am watching and listening to someone who is evil. As HCR wrote we know who Donald Trump is. It is imperative that we act to preserve Democracy and civility.

I couldn't agree more, Liza. And thank you for saying it so eloquently! It's truly a needed call to action: VOTE! and STAND UP TO SUPPORT DEMOCRACY IN ANY WAY YOU CAN!

That video is so chilling. I know I must do what I can in my humble every person life to help fight back against the hate. I try to stay positive thinking there must be more of us than them but I’m honestly very frightened.

Sadly, Biden's effectiveness shows us that what we think we need in a president is not what we really do need. So... much as I admired Obama (and recognize that he was a key element in the recovery after the 2008 collapse), Obama's charisma was not enough to get legislation through. An experienced old hand like Biden (similar to LBJ) is what we need. That he stumbles on words is not important compared to his patience in leading Democrats in legislating and leading the Western World in foreign policy challenges.

Terry ~ You hit the nail on the head. Why is Biden's decades-long successful governing experience shrugged off while a tyrant's stupid unending lies are given credence and press coverage? Rhetorical question, I guess.

Expand full comment

Sure. But some is the press always looking for a story. One problem is the right wing press. I looked at Fox's on line feed yesterday and saw a short video clip which showed Biden talking to various officers then looking around. No sound. The clip was interpreted that Biden had lost it. Clearly creating nonsense out of nothing.

Horrible.

Exactly, Terry. Biden knows how the govt works, and he's not wasting time. People seem to think they need to have a beer with their president or that he/she should be engaging.

When I look at reruns of that day, I am appalled. I can't believe it actually happened in the US of A, and that the main rebel rouser was not immediately put in jail. It's the same feeling I had when I went to bed after watching the election results. It was as though I were having a nightmare. I stayed up as long as I could hoping things would change, and when it didn't, I stared at the ceiling all night not believing what I had just seen happen. This clown, this phony tv personality, with the Dorito-colored face, who couldn't put a intelligent sentence together if he tried, was really going to be President? Had we stooped so low? Did getting what they wanted on abortion and judges justify electing a buffoon? I upped my prayers that night and have continued them in earnest because I love our country and want it to survive. It won't if the orange man is in charge.

You said it! What a magnificent statement! I only wish it could be used to persuade the millions of lemmings following that orange buffoon over the cliff and into chaos.

Lisa ~ A humongous YES to everything you said! I'm going to forward your "Who Are We?" to friends who may need a little more urging to try to stop this destructive avalanche. My big question is: "How can we prevent the press from re-electing a Democracy destroyer?" He may hate the press, but that's his biggest public enabler. And thank you for reminding us of Biden's superb accomplishments, for which the press gives him little or no attention. When things go bad, Biden i s blamed. When things go well, Biden is ignored. Is that fair? C'mon, journalists, stop granting so many words to a dangerous criminal, stop quoting his ignorant rants, and devote more deserved space to the accomplishments of our legally elected president, Joe Biden. (Thanks for listening.)

Liza, as soon as I saw your “Who Are We?” header, I knew what today’s message was about. A friend and I watched President Biden’s speech together, and we both responded immediately (in unison!) to that quote - “Yes, that’s what this coming year is all about! Who ARE we?” I agree with Kate - your drawing should be a New Yorker cover.

Up here in Canada we hope that saner minds prevail. We are influenced by what happens south of us. Trump gives strength to this like minded people up here. We are also not immune to disinformation and crazy thinking. We have Poilievre, head of our Progressive (hah!) Conservatives running in our next election. Probably you haven’t heard of him but check him out. No corruption (so far) but very regressive.
